London!!

So first things first, after spending hours on end trying to get my suitcase to 20kg, I managed it. Donal didn’t bother and what a move that was, he checked his in at 25.6kg and the lady didn’t second glance!!

The flight from Sydney to Singapore was pretty good. I had one beer and got ‘altitude pissed’, Donal had 3 even though I distinctly heard him ask for water.

Every time I tried to sleep, Donal would poke me in the eye ball (with his finger) to wake me up. We ended up getting into a wrestling match which probably wasn’t a great idea on a plane these days, we could’ve been shot.

Meanwhile the guy next to me was fighting back vomit the entire eight hours until the landing where his stomach could no longer accommodate what his head wanted and he vomited pretty heavily into one of those shitty little aeroplane bags they give you. Pretty sure Donal and I were the first to get off cattle class even though we were at the back of the plane.

In Singapore it was still hot outside, we just spent the two hours searching the airport. We bought dumplings and searched the internet. I paid twenty Australian dollars for 14 of the dumplings, got Singaporean change which is now sitting in my wallet and is never going to be used again. Great.

The next flight to London was pretty painful, sixteen hours next to the muscle man, two seats down from an Asian bloke who snored like the plane itself and one row away from two screaming, newborn babies. I’m never having kids. Or if I do, I’m either freighting them over on another plane or checking them in as stored luggage, mainly to respect the other passengers.

London is fantastic. Everyone is rushing, it’s cold and dreary, but I love it. Donal’s Aunty picked us up from the airport and we had about a twenty minute drive to her house in Putney. At first I thought the car had only done 36,000km and congratulated her on getting such a good deal on a Peugeot. Found out it was in miles (idiot), secondly I thought we were driving in 1st gear down the freeway as we were sitting on ’50′ on the Speedo, yes, they are miles too (idiot)!

I’m extremely jetlagged; I was trying very hard to stay awake yesterday but was falling asleep at the dinner table. I crashed out at 6:30pm our local time. (We’re 10 hours behind you)

I’ve taken a few photos which I’ve put in ‘Gallery – London’, so check them out when you get a chance.

There isn’t a whole lot else to say. We’re doing all the boring shit today – bank accounts, phones, oyster cards etc. Donal’s cousins are great, they’re taking us down the pub tonight to get us drunk on warm, watered down English beer – can’t wait!

Tomorrow we’re gonna do some touring so I’ll hopefully be able to post more interesting stuff soon.

For now though I wanted to give you a brief overview of my first take on London – it’s awesome!

Sounds like your off to a good start and im already counting down till I leave so I can get over there as well. In the interim its back to assignments and textbooks… fun, fun. 4. Kilos in weight. Miles in distance. Pounds in British currency. Australian dollars & cents. I wouldn’t have a hope of remembering unless I had a warm Beer. Oh and to have a Snowball again. Lucky you – the British pubs are the best.

  5. Great to hear you made it there in one piece – looking forward to hearing your take on pommy beer – from I remember it was one of the reasons I moved to Australia!

BTW – I forgot to warn you Ben – if you find your way down to Devon or Cornwall, be real careful of the home brewed Scrumpy (cider) you might find in some of the out-of-the-way pubs – that stuff will seriously take your head off.
